She married Dick DeVos, entrepreneur, community activist, and philanthropist. The couple has four children and five grandchildren.

Business and Philanthropy Work

The renowned businesswoman and philanthropist got elected as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party four times. Betsy DeVos is the former Chairman of The Windquest Group and has been active in her community. She is the former chair of the American Federation for Children and on the board of directors of The Philanthropy Roundtable.

Her interest in school choice for children happened over 30 years ago when their children were in school and visiting schools. DeVos has said while they could send their children to the schools best for them she saw parents doing whatever they could to send their children to the school best for them. She and her husband became committed to school choice. In 1990 Dick was elected to the State Board of Education. Betsy focused on starting a foundation that gave scholarships to low-income families. This gave the families the ability to decide where to send their children to school. She became even more involved during the 1990’s serving on the boards of two national 501(c)(3) organizations. These charities were Children First America and American Education Reform Council. Betsy and Dick DeVos were involved in passing Michigan’s first charter school bill in 1993.

Betsy DeVos has a vision that the parents in spite of their zip code they should have the right to choose the best type of education setting for their children. In this children would then reach the highest potential in their ability. She has commented on how she was bored in through school and believes that all learning resources should be used including new technologies. She believes it could make learning fun and provide instant information for children to learn.

While DeVos has worked for years to promote ways for parents to have school choice and charter schools she also sees a benefit in other forms of education including homeschooling. Visit dbdvfoundation.org to know more about their foundation.
